Smart Key vs. Transponder Key: Which One Does Your Car Use?
Customers often ask for a "copy" of their key without knowing which technology is inside it. Here is a plain-English breakdown of the four types we program most often.
Transponder keys
A metal key with a chip in the plastic head. You insert and turn it. The chip must be programmed to the immobilizer or the engine will crank but not start.
Remote head keys
A transponder key with lock, unlock and panic buttons built into the head. Both the chip and the remote functions need programming.
Smart keys and push-to-start
No blade in the ignition — the vehicle detects the fob as you approach and you press a start button. These require secure module programming and are the most equipment-dependent to replace.
How to tell what you have
